A full 6-weeks break; beginning of the season; yet again the much known opponent – Lanka. Yet, India managed to register a dominated win here at Hambantota after scoring a mammoth of 314 runs.

There is no end on captain MS Dhoni’s smiley face as his boys have lifted game with pure domination in each department of the game. Not only batting but bowling and fielding, there is no occasion to raise eyebrow for the given performances.

India who won the toss decided to bat first. And by keeping captain’s decision on top, Indian warriors commit no mistake to rob mighty Lankans in their own backyard.

Sehwag’s arrival ensured good start by keeping opponent bowlers under-pressure whereas Irfan complemented given faith and selection on him. Zaheer launched his way-back from injuries while Kohli assured his non-stop hitting in front of his favourite team – Lanka.

Though, crowd is not seen enough in terms of numbers at Hambantota stadium due to transportation facilities but for sure, the spectators reached out there must have enjoyed some good performances from both sides.

For India, Gambhir and Sehwag started off the proceedings but failed to perform like before. Kulasekara opened wicket account for Lanka in the 2nd over of the match by hitting Gambhir’s stumps. Gambhir wasn’t looking comfortable from ball one and Lankan pacer didn’t make any mistake by grabbing him early on.

Although, Sehwag could have been first win for Lankans. But thanks to Dilshan who escaped Sehwag; for which, later Lankans were forced to chase 315 runs to register a win.

The kind of start Lankans had no one can think a 314 runs score-card for India after 50 overs. Pair of Malinga and Kulasekara tried their best to fetch as many wickets as they can. But Kohli had something else in his mind.

With Sehwag, he not only played sensible cricket but also, helped India to score with a rich run-rate. From Gambhir’s Dismissal to Sehwag’s unfortunate run-out, Kohli helped to set a launch pad for India; through which later team able to score 314/6.

From 11/1 to 228/4, Kohli build his game in an artist style. He batted for whole 38 overs and ended his card after lifting bat for another crafty of 106 runs off 113 balls with an oomph strike rate of 93.80! Truly a treat to watch.

Words with Sehwag, who missed a deserved come-back century. His haste to grasp a single cost him with a run-out. Not enough lucky this time. Rohit Sharma, who was sent at No.4 to bat, failed to use given opportunity and sent back on 5 by Mathews.

After Sehwag-Kohli show, CSK brothers Raina-Dhoni took charge to uplift Indian score-card. Like his name, Raina gestured with a handy half-century firmly accompanied by his skipper who scored quick 35 off 29. The fiery batting duo had left woes for hosts before respective dismissals. Total of 79 runs in 9 overs including 6-fours and 2-sixes set the stage for Indians to clinch a win.

Later Pathan came at No.7 but nothing much has left in the game for him in terms of batting. Yet, it is just a start of the series. He has a lot to receive and deliver.

India challenged hosts to chase a huge target for which Lankans, without a doubt, need to perform above their class and calibre. Playing in home-conditions, it is unfair to underestimate Lankans with the likes of Sangakkara and Mahela – their two most reckoned match winners.

But sorry to say, neither their opening pair brought enough room of runs to start nor they played responsible cricket. Former skipper Kumar Sangakkara seems helpless in the middle; was fighting lone to keep his team’s chances of survival.

Though, Tharanga (28 off 47) and Perera (44 off 28) tried to build some handy partnership with him but then Indians had mental advantage here. Clever bowling and well supported fielding scripted an official but not handsome win for Indians though.

Thanks to a generous scoring of Sangakkara (133 off 151) whose efforts kept Lankans hope alive in the game. If he was supported for a long-inning partnership with any of his mate, Lankans might have won this match.

Though, after seeing first inning performance India is, undoubtedly, official winners. But then, cricket is a game of uncertainties. What if Mahela-Sangakkara came up with their trademark performances? What if Indians didn’t bowl with enough discipline and attitude?

Dhoni’s battlers not only enhanced the game by respective performances but also, have proved their selection right. Keep in mind, India come up after a break whereas Lankans continuously playing string of matches.

If non-stop cricket and mental fatigue affects a superior team’s game, then you should blame Lankan Board.

But then, how else would you appreciate a team performance and excellency over its competitor team?

The 5-matches ODI series has begun. Hope, Lankans can make a comeback in the next match. Else, with arrival of Sehwag and Zaheer in the side, definitely Kohli would add more.

Every next series whether it is Test or ODI, Lankans are either visiting us or inviting. It is not just about conducting a bilateral series but also, in every tri-nation or even multi-nation series – you can find the same team playing against each other.

For say, T20 World Cup group match – 2009, Asia Cup Final – 2010, ODI World Cup Final – 2011.

I mean bilateral series are okay but what is point of scheduling tri-nation series with them either.

From 2009, India have appeared in 16 bilateral series and 5 triangular series out of which 3 have been played against Sri Lanka; whereas in all 5 triangular series, Lankans competed as third favourite team.

And what would you say, if I compile stats between these two nations after no-series-play with Pakistan.

Since 2009, India have played 6 Tests, 28 ODIs and 4 T20s against Sri Lanka overall which includes 5 finale standings. Isn’t it enough though, we are again buckled up for the same rivalry to watch.

After Pakistan’s exit, do Lankans acclaimed BCCI’s exclusive rights to play with us? Season could be new but not the opposition for us – Indians. From 2008-09 season to till now, if we have rare clash against Pakistan on the field; then in the reverse manner, we scheduled series with Lanka off the field.

Believe it or not – but only season 2011-12 was the exception where, luckily, we didn’t get the same glimpse. Only one match has been played between these two sides and that is the WC finale for which you can’t even complain! My condolence!

Instead of wondering, say thanks to Australia and Pakistan for their true calibre and peak performances during CB series and Asia Cup respectively; else it would have been another boring combination – India vs Sri Lanka in finale, AGAIN.

Are you not tired of listening same commentary, saying: “when it comes to India vs SL, MSD don’t need to interact much with his boys. They know where to take field when there is a change in strike. After all, they know each-other’s very well.”

Just because India can’t play against Pakistan due to political and other issues; it doesn’t mean our every 3rd competitor would be Sri Lanka. Instead of this, can’t we give a break to our cricketers who constantly complained about too much cricket?

We can either allow them to play in domestic cricket instead of bunching against the same bouquet.

Still, if a tournament or series is that much necessary to conduct we have other nations as well. Can’t Bangladesh be the 3rd competitor instead of Lankans or even Pakistan? We could try for Indo-Pak matches at a neutral venue.

I agree, it wasn’t easy but not impossible either. Just like now BCCI trying to rebuild cricket relations with PCB; can’t it be done earlier as well? Still it is a proposal from BCCI and we have mixed of opinions. And trust me if, we had tried it earlier, it would have the same results.

If not earlier then why should now and if now, then why should not earlier?

At one hand both nations’ PM met at Mohali Stadium – not just to witness a semi final WC match, but to relish the high profile India-Pak semi final thrill; where on another side, the same nation’s players are not allowed to for an entire cricket series. What’s wrong in this, after all!

They say Sports enhance brotherhood, unity and peace but when it matters most, they step back by mentioning old issues. Can’t we resolve it?

Let cricket be your reason. Let two nations play again. Let the ground to achieve more cricket heights.

I won’t say we, India, shouldn’t play against Lanka. But at least there should be a designed gap between such redundancies. Seeing top two Asian teams playing against each other in every next 3rd series is quite tedious. NO?

Again, the same Asian giants are ready to roar in order to clinch another ODI title.

Would it be a new fascinating end as BCCI proposed Indo-Pak war on a return track? Or shall we expect more?

I would say, enjoy Mahela's captaincy as you know MSD well though!

Like the much dominated T20 series, Windies continue with their winning carnival over mighty Kiwis in ODIs as well. Credit to too many injuries in New Zealand camp; Sammy & boys are reaping all energy of their down on morale colleagues. With having Gayle storm in the dressing room along with handy home conditions – NZ might be waiting for Brendon McCullum’s arrival in the side.

Same ground, same pitch – just little darker in terms of look this time; back-to-back win for hosts and rest is done by the injured players on the tour – Kiwis are totally helpless to find a perfect combination for them.

Like what Windies did in the previous match, New Zealand’s youngest ever ODI skipper – Kane Williamson followed the same. NZ decided to bowl first after winning the toss. While couple of changes were made in the NZ side due to cover injured players, WI went with an unchanged playing XI.

In order to capitalize home conditions, Simmons and Gayle walk out to the middle for a blistering start. It was surely in the mind of Darren Sammy – to allow Chris Gayle play his shots – as visitors already struggling to get a good start.

But it didn’t go the same way. Day-Night match at Kingston, Jamaica – where pitch is expected to help bowlers due to moisture residing in it; first 5-overs brought wicket celebration for Kiwis. Courtesy Tim Southee, Lendl Simmons was sent off too early.

10/1 after 4 overs and then begins Gayle storm. Three 6s to Kyle Mills in very next over, Kiwis invited troubles for own. Though, they would never have thought early wicket fall could cost them in such a way that they have to wait for Brendon’s arrival to register a win.

Slowly arising score-card, Gayle, too, showed enough patience in his batting – something that doesn’t suits his style. But then, that’s the benefit of having experience in the side which is, somehow, keeping NZ away from a tour win.

First, a compatible start with Smith, which later smoothly driven with the help of Samuel on the other hand – Gayle rocked Caribbean inning in a style. Patience with persistence is what drawn by these two middle-order batsmen from West Indies.

With Samuel from an individual score of 58* to another watchable century display of 125 runs – Gayle shared 100 runs partnership off 90 balls which includes third powerplay.

228/3 after 38 overs, Windies has a go to end on high. In the name of slog overs – as they usually considered favouring batting side – NZ who are already lacking their key players in the side, couldn’t manage to stop Samuels.

For them, Kiwis, Gayle was the only big fish to grab. But later the show displayed by Samuels was one of a kind. He not only batted well but also maintained the Run Rate as well. Unlike Gayle, Samuels didn’t get enough support from the other end; yet he managed to score enough.

Small partnership with Pollard and Bravo, which later concluded by Sammy –not only brought a mammoth of 315 runs for Windies on the board, but also a crafty ton for him. Like Gayle, he too got a moment to have a run on ground. Such a capture.

But the irony is what chasing NZ continuously since beginning. And now, they are given a target of 316 to have a glimpse of win. What a mishap for already shattered team.

Though, NZ didn’t give up and started off well. Comparatively, till 5-overs game WI were failed to enjoy earned batting edge. It was Ravi Rampual who provide first breakthrough in 6th over. Otherwise, NZ could grip the game afterwards as it is a 50 over format game. A team always has chance for a comeback.

From 62/2 to 121/3 – once NZ had all chances to fight back with a win. But middle order failure cost them in such a way that entire team has been sent to pavilion within 47 overs only. On their note – Guptil, Williamson and Watling scored enough runs. Unlike Windies, they lacked with one solid partnership through which they could fire.

Of course, chasing 316 on a slower track is never easy but not gettable either. With having enough weapons in the armoury, it would be easy. What played key role here at Sabina Park in between these two teams is temperament.

One side, WI revived with having Gayle back in the side whereas, NZ lost their key players due to unfortunate injury issues. On the other hand, match-by-match defeats exposed NZ experience and weaknesses in compare to WI who are undefeated from last 4-matches.

Hope, Brendon’s arrival could make a difference for NZ in terms of better results.

In a total dominance from Ball one to wrap the kiwi innings up, West Indies who has upper-hand over mighty Kiwis, have won the opener of T20 series with full marks. Jam-packed stadium and excitement of T20 format went on high with the arrival of Gayle in the Caribbean side. Weekend game brought Saturday bonanza to spectators out there in Lauderhill, Florida.

Chris Gayle' 85 not out brilliance gave West Indies a head start in the T20 series against New Zealand at Lauderhill, Florida

From 2010 to till now, it’s been 2 years for Lauderhill to host an international match. More to promote cricket in USA, it is a big chance for players to seal a World Cup seat which is only 3 months away to till date.

Add to that, spectators too are equally excited to witness the match as 10,000 tickets are said to be sold for entire T20 series. On the verge to find out his best men for the upcoming T20 WC, New Zealand skipper – Ross Taylor, won the toss and elected to bowl first.

As pitch is expected to be on slower side with the game, two key bowlers – Ravi Rampaul and Kyle Mills are rested from either side to make a room for spin options.

But it wasn’t enough though.

New Zealand’s decision to bowl first cost them in a Gayle style. Dwayne Smith opens Windies account with a six to McCullum. As long as he stayed on the crease, Gayle remains silent. After the end of 4th over, Kiwis got their first wicket. Courtesy Bracewell, Smith was departed on crucial 17 off 13 balls.

Although, Windies got the start for what they aimed for earlier.

27/1 after 4 overs, Gayle has the perfect platform to look on. Playing with his name and fame, Gayle (85*) took the charge and started crafting score-board steadily. Thanks to Charles (24 off 29 balls), who patiently accompanied him for a solid start forward, followed by Pollard (63*).

The swashbuckling partnership between Gayle and Pollard ensured a win for West Indies as every over after Pollard’s arrival either bringing a boundary or went out for a six. For New Zealand, neither bowlers nor fielders are contributing enough to stop any of these two.

For the attacking batting duo – Gayle & Pollard, 168/2 after 18 over were not sufficient though, as they grabbed 41 runs in last two over including 4-sixes and 3-fours. And as a result, Kiwis have a sum of 210 runs to chase down on a slower track.

In reply, New Zealand got the slow start. 37/0 after 4 over, some real pace needs to be shown by NZ batsmen. But then Sunil Narine snatched that moment and sent off Guptill for just 11 runs – his first ever T20I victim after fabulous IPL-5 with champion status.

Although, Captain Ross Taylor could manage to get some runs in the kitty but a boundary saving effort during Windies batting hurt his shoulder so badly that he has to retired hurt on 11 runs. And somehow, this is enough to script a loss for New Zealand.

On the other hand, Windies capitalized on this moment quickly. They not only fielded well but also their bowlers stick with good line and length. Thoughts with Kiwis, in the frustration to score more runs they lost wickets on regular intervals.

Late call, misjudgement of shot and pressure to chase down a huge total – Sammy & Co. finished the proceedings in 18.3 overs.

Large number of spectators, who were gathered to witness a competitive match, left the stadium with one-sided team efforts. Chris Gayle, definitely, not only sealed an opening win for the team but also, gave value to crowds money who were dying to watch him play for the national side – the West Indies.

Likes of genuine all-rounders – Darren Sammy, Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard along with spin options in the form of Sunil Narine, the Windies have a good variation in bowling department. Though, Fidel Edwards and Ravi Rampaul don’t need any introduction in the pace department.

In the batting, the Windies aren’t potent enough. Although, their all-rounders are capable enough to lift the game on any given day. All eyes would be on whether Chris Gayle will be in the playing XI or not. Though, his arrival in the national team will surely boost the West Indies chances here.

New Zealand camp:

From their last tour to Lauderhill to till now, Kiwi side has been totally reformed. Presence of two key veteran players – Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum could be missed. But then a good chance for young guns to come up front and prove the caliber.

To strengthen their bowling attack, the main weapon of Pak, Pakistan has included the left-arm pace bowler Sohail Tanvir. Tanvir was sharp and accurate during the T20 series. Tanvir last played an ODI for Pakistan way back in 20011. And since 2007, Mohammad Sami will be seen running in full throttle for Pakistan with the ball in the ODIs.

Bowling is never a worry for Pakistan with plenty of depth, guile and variety. But their main worry is with batting which possesses aggression but lacks caution and temperament. Very often the batting falls under pressure while chasing and again, the fielding is a big headache for them where comedy shows are always in offer with drop catches, mis-fielding and so on.

But whatever it is, you can never deny their ability to dance the wolf-dance any time on any occasion, on any tough circumstances. Watching the green army in action is never short of excitement. Pakistan’s charisma is the thing which can set jitters in the Lankan camp anytime and might be the factor to script the series in favor of them.

Sri Lanka camp:

The Lankans in their own backyard are always good competitors. Home ground, local spectators and with talented pool of players; Lankans are equally as favorite as Pakistan. Mahela’s captaincy has made Sri Lanka a different unit altogether and even though they had a frustrating Asia Cup campaign, they have the spice in them to hit the jackpot.

The challenge for Mahela & Co. would be to find an ideal blend.

Having 5 all-rounders in an ODI format is quite irritating. One way, it not only takes out one premium bowler from the side but also stretches your batting tail that simply disturbs batting order.

Unlike T20, ODI needs a balanced ratio of batsmen and bowlers instead of string of all-rounders. Still, it would be fascinating to see what combination will be on field during match days.

Sri Lanka has the edge over Pakistan in batting and fielding while the bowling is heavily centered on the slinger – Malinga.

An ideal combination is the key to Lanka’s success.

Mathews, who captained the side in place of Jayawardene lost the toss and was invited by Pakistan to bowl first. Kapudegedera and Udana were the replacement for veterans Jayawardene and Malinga. For Pakistan, Umar Gul was replaced by Yasir Arafat due to his poor performance in previous match.

Adding charms to a T20 game, Sunday was enough to fetch crowd at stadium. Giving reason for major change in Lankan side, it’s strange how a domestic tournament like IPL receiving priority over national duty. Pity on spectators who were cheated by team management to witnessed a high-performance packed show into an average game display.

But for Pakistan, it’s a golden hen to hatch. With non-availability of top batsmen and bowler from opposition side; it would be folly of Hafeez to lose such a worthy chance to make a comeback in the series.

Amidst of this entire saga, proceedings at Hambantota took place. Kulasekara with new ball all set to rock his skipper. Absence of Malinga didn’t reflect in the match as Pakistan was 18/2 after 5 overs – a sigh-of-relief start for Lankans to carry forward.

After skipper’s departure in 11th over, Afridi took the charge of Pakistan batting; well supported by Malik to rise up the scoreboard. And as a result, A half-century of Afridi (52*) with efforts of Malik (27) led Sri Lanka to chase a sum of 123 runs.

A low scoring match and without a thought, Lankans almost has all chances to seal the series by 2-0. Till 3rd over, everything went in favor of Lanka. Sangakkara, who replaced Mahela as an opener, along with Dilshan provided a steady start.

On the other hand, Pakistan who was looking for a breakthrough grabbed two wickets in 4th over and opens an account towards win. Two setbacks within an over, Lanka badly need real patience from middle order. With experience batsmen on one end, Dilshan and Kapugedera recovered early damage and led score board to 41/3 after 8 overs before the dismissal of Dilshan.

Seeing lack of experience in the Lankan middle order, Pakistan bowlers throw all their efforts to sum up the proceedings. Ajmal from one end with Afridi as spin partner, Lankan batsman give up after their tries. Some handy fours and sixes with regular wickets brought smiles in Pakistan camp.

Mohd. Sami, who is the watchable player of this T20 series, played a huge role towards team win. Two wickets in an over by him followed by equal support from Ajmal and Afridi, Lanka bowled out in 19.2 overs.

The changes made by Lankans in order to try World Cup contenders cost them in such a way that Pakistan rejoiced win with a result of 1-1.

After a decent show in BPL and Pakistan’s domestic T20 leagues, Mohammad Sami has made a comeback in the side. The kind of form Sami exhibited it is expected that he will add extra energy to this Pakistani attack. In the batting department, some fresh blood has been injected for the sake of upcoming World Cup.

It’s the bowling that is Pakistan’s strength with batting being unpredictable and the fragile fielding is the biggest worry for Pakistan. The IPL journey of the fighter from Kolkata

Very few captains from India dared to walk on the water. Very captains from India dared to throw the newball to an unknown youngster; very few dared to encourage the Youngistaan. Very captains in India could be an engineer of the ‘New India.’

He taught his men to get hungry for win, to chase the impossible dreams. He gave them the self-belief to pull matches out of the fire. He never hesitated to make daring decisions. Overall, he was an aggressive Indian skipper and perhaps the only one.

He was none other than our Dada, Sourav Ganguly.

They say name is enough to reckon. I would say ‘Dada’ was enough to ensure the winning mantra.

After retiring from international cricket, Dada started his career in IPL. The prince of Kolkata – Sourav Ganguly is all set to bid adieu from IPL as a player. So far, the glory he has as an International player; sadly IPL draw some poor sketches in the courageous journey of India’s most successful captain in Tests.

Let’s have a look at Dada’s IPL journey so far:

Season 1 –

It was an oomph moment for Kolkata peoples and DADA fans when Kolkata Knight Riders going to be captained by their own local hero. Being stated among the iconic players for IPL-1, it was a big tournament for him after taking retirement from International Cricket in 2008.

He ended the season as top scorer (349 runs from 13 matches) for his side. The combination of Ganguly and Buchanan failed to make any impression on the team standings.

KKR ended their season with 13 points (6 wins, 7 loss, 1 no result) at No. 6.

Such epic performances raised questions over these two think tanks amongst the franchisee. Ganguly was forced to step down as skipper and Buchanan as coach.

As soon as the news flashed in the media, fans started protesting against SRK (Shah Ruk Khan). With knowing people’ s sentiments towards cricket, some reports from Shah Rukh’s resources claimed to change Kolkata Knight Riders to Knight Riders.

After all, what could remain in KKR without Ganguly as skipper!

Season 2 –

Like their owner, KKR always loves to be in lime light. This time, they came up with “multiple captains” theory, courtesy Australian coach – John Buchanan. It was a slight signal from KKR management that they no more want Ganguly as skipper for the side.

Ganguly was kept in the same franchisee but wasn’t respected with skipper’s cap. Brendon McCullum of New Zealand was declared first person for the side, a sharp and calculated move by the KKR think thank. NO?

They knew that this year IPL would be held in South Africa and why they should care about Ganguly! Poor gesture by SRK but what else he could do as an owner! But remember, it’s a business that demand profits and nothing else.

Words with McCullum who was supposed to be bring-it-all man, KKR this time demoted to number 8 in the points tally with 7 points (3 wins, 10 lose, 1 no result).

Like his captain status, in season-2 Dada failed to score enough runs and was dropped to number 3 (189 runs from 13 matches) in the leading KKR batting list.

However, he was introduced to a new kind of KKR venture in 2009. Kolkata began a talent hunt competition named as “Knight and Angels” to select their cheerleaders. For which Dada was appointed as a judge. But the winning team wasn’t allowed to perform in Africa due to the authorities out there.

Season 3 –

In 2010, IPL and DADA both are back to their deserved places. With non-availability of KKRs supposed to be captain – McCullum and Ponting, Ganguly once again given the responsibility to motivate the low-in-confidence side in order to produce better results, Buchanan replaced by Dave Whatmore as the head coach.

With giving full marks to Ganguly as skipper, KKR had an awesome start to the season comparatively to their old track records. Their evergreen stats of being highlighted in controversies - KKR again ended season with spear of thoughts.

But the season-3 had the most controversies – from player auction to franchisee stack, from IPL management to political connections and corruption within league.

But Dada’s performance used to shine brightly and overshadowed everything. He once again not only scored most runs (493 from 14 matches) for KKR but also ended the season as the 4th highest run-getter.

KKR improved their rank from IPL-2, but equalize their stat with season-1 position – summed up at 6th place with 14 points (7 win, 7 lose).

Season 4 –

Leading the side twice with same results, IPL 2011 brought greatest set back for India’s most successful captain. Ganguly remained unsold in the players’ auction. Height of mockery!

Over-aged, fitness issues, inconsistency in performance, conflicts with franchisee owner and coach, continuous downward curve of results – given reasons by the authorities for Ganguly’s omission.

But look at the popularity graph, entire season of IPL-4 he was more in every cricketing conversations rather than the ongoing cricket. Campaign to bring back Dada got hyped. There was hardly anyone who is not aware of it or not be a part of it.

Efforts didn’t go in vain. After lots of hoo-ha, Pune Warriors bought Dada in their squad on May 3, 2011 as a replacement for injured Nehra and then arrived one of the most sentimental moments of cricket.

In a match against Hyderabad, a devotee of Dada breached security to touch his feet. It was his comeback match in IPL and fans were equally excited to witness it as much Dada himself.

That’s what we called worship for cricket, a scenario that DADA too will never forget.

Although, Pune Warriors had the brilliance to go a long way in the tournament, but their inconsistency in defeats powered them to 9th place out of 10.

Ganguly too didn’t impress much with given matches and scored 50 runs from 4 matches.

Season 5 –

The Dada fans were waiting for the IPL to watch him playing again and hours before 2012 IPL auction, a statement from Subrata Roy – PWI owner, shook every cricket fan. The press release from franchisee officials claimed to pull back their all stack in IPL and BCCI from the tournament.

It not just halted many cricketers career, but also for Dada who was once again considered in the lime lights. I, too, felt sad with the given mishap. What irony destiny claiming against him, after all.

Is this the price of being a fighter?

But the drama is not yet over.

February 16, 2011 brought smiles as BCCI and Sahara concluded all the difference within themselves and the Pune Warriors were all set to rock in IPL-5.

In the absence of Yuvraj Singh, captaincy once again handed over to Dada. Their beginning of the IPL-5 campaign too was sound. But as soon as the tournament progressed, the Warriors lost their way.

A string of 8 matches defeat shattered all their chances to survive in the IPL, another disappointing season for Dada and somehow, quite enough to take a call on his IPL career.

Sources from Warriors too claimed that this is the last year for Ganguly to play in IPL as a player and he could be appointed mentor of the side for the next season.

That swashbuckling inning of KKR’s Brendon McCullum (158* vs RCB) kicked off IPL in a style. Beginning with a blast, year 2008 brought new investors to cricket.

Season-1 (2008):

Beginning with a ton wasn’t enough though, as Mike Hussey of CSK came with another century (116* vs KXIP) on day-2. A string of 13 sixes in that inning is still an IPL record. T20 league that begun for betterment of Indian players; sadly none of any local boy gestured with a ton.

And at the end of season-1, we have a SIX of IPL tons and entertainers being McCullum, Hussey, Symonds, GilChrist, Jayasuriya and Shaun Marsh – four from Australia and each from New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

Interestingly, season-1 witnessed crazy stat of ‘two Australians’. Symonds & GilChrist scored tons with a strike rate of 220+ for the same franchise – Deccan Chargers. Whereas Rajasthan Royals, winner of 2008 IPL season, witnessed century celebrations of Symonds and Shaun Marsh against themselves.

Season-2 (2009):

In 2009, IPL moved to Rainbow Nation – South Africa. Bouncy track, fast pitches; selection of Africans over other overseas players was an obvious point. Reason being – home conditions. Unlike season-1, IPL-2 had only two centurions – an African and an Indian.

Young Manish Pandey bagged title of ‘First Indian IPL centurion’ (at Centurion, SA). Playing for RCB, his 100 came against mind game of Symonds who constantly tried to distract his focus. This ton is special, not because it came from an Indian player; but also, it came from a 21-year old lad that too on African soil. Whereas, AB de Villiers being another centurion for IPL-2.

Though, Suresh Raina of CSK was supposed to be the first Indian IPL centurion who scored a brave 98 runs against Rajasthan Royals at Centurion, SA. A tough catch by Graeme Smith restricted him; else it could have been a boundary for a ton celebration.

Season-3 (2010):

IPL-3 came and we’re back to India. Drawing inspiration from Manish Pandey, two other Indians – Yusuf Pathan and Murali Vijay impressed with respective art. Pathan, who represented Rajasthan Royals that year, grabbed fastest IPL ton (100 off 37 balls, vs Mumbai Indians). His strike rate of 270.27 is the highest ever by any centurion in all IPL seasons.

Second highest run scorer for CSK in 2010, Murali Vijay’s ton (127 off 56 balls) vs Rajasthan Royals set a record for Chennai – highest team total (246-5) in any IPL season.

With continuing Australians charms to IPL, David Warner joined IPL Century club in season-3. Words with KKR, who were sympathize with two centuries against themselves. Double ‘D’ – David Warner and Mahela Jayawardene (abbreviated for Denagamage Proboth Mahela de Silva Jayawardene) did this honor for Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab respectively.

Season-4 (2011):

A year to be written in golden words for Indian cricket and their dominance towards World Cup 2011. World Champions, India, without enough celebrations shattered in club teams to fill IPL outfits.

And no surprises, Indians sparkled in front of club spectators, too. One hand, Sachin and Sehwag treated themselves with an IPL century; on the other hand, a new name has been added to IPL stars – Paul Valthathy. Recognized as next sensation after Yusuf Pathan, his inning of 120* runs against CSK did the job. Most 4s in an IPL inning (19 fours) and the boy from Mumbai has become a local star for Punjab.

Though, IPL-4 had lots more to remember for. Who can forget Gayle-force and that too twice; wrapped in a single season. Playing for RCB, century-knock against Kolkata (102*) and Punjab (107) made him first IPL player to have two century in the kitty. Moreover, he is the only player to score two IPL centuries under the same club and the only holder of two centuries in single season.

Adam GilChrist is the second who has two IPL centuries under his belt. His second ton came against RCB while playing for Punjab in 2011.

Season-5 (2012):

IPL-5 and now slightly tagged with boredom. Reason could be too much cricket or debacle of Indians at International arena. After all, we’re playing in India and how can see them losing again.

Yet, a new ray for India’s future has arrived in form of Ajinkya Rahane. New centurion in list and thankfully, an Indian addition. Rahane who is playing as an opener, a ton (103*) against strong RCB adds more value to his role and style. Representing Rajasthan Royals this year, Son of Mumbai expected to be the next Dravid in line.

Kevin Pietersen hardly has a complete IPL season (due to national responsibilities); this year gifted him with a ton.

Conceptual benefit:

After all excuses, for most of the overseas players; IPL is a platform to find form and fitness. If BCCI began this league for calculating Indian benefits, then sorry to say we need to be smarter though. Inclusion of four foreign players is a key point for other boards to count on.

A Skipper has seven nations to choose four foreign players; but for rest of the team, Indians are the only options. Henceforth, it demands more fitness and performing skills comparatively.

However, from beginning it’s been a place for young lads to perform and attract selectors for promotion – national cap. Likes of Watson, Marsh, Wayne Parnell, Angelo Mathews, and JP Duminy are the prime examples of it. Their potential at international level is alike of IPL where Indians stands? Remember Yusuf Pathan, Ravinder Jadeja, Ashwin, Murali Vijay, Umesh Yadav, Sudeep Tyagi and Rahul Sharma. These are few examples, list is quite long though.

Still, tournament is in progress and more gems are expected to extend this list. Hope they will keep promising performances at supreme level too.

In the end, just a surprising stat.

You know, Delhi Daredevils being the only team who don’t have a single century against them (considering all IPL seasons; else count on Pune too).

If change in team composition can fancy your performance, then every team should follow that. But how can change in captainship refresh entire line-up, ask to Lehmann about it!

Decision to swap Sangakkara with White almost did the trick, except failed batting display. Anticipation of Chargers in fielding and bowling department is admirable. At one stage, it could be anyone’s game. However, low scoring games (tend to be) scripted with win of team batting second, and it ends in the similar way.

IPL 2012: credit to bowlers – slow chase of Mumbai Indians | Planet "M"

Despite his Man of the Match performance, it was a disappointing day for Dale Steyn and as a DC fan.

Contest between Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians would never be that fascinating as it was today. Restricting Chargers on a sum of 100 runs, fielding unit should receive applauds. But when time came to finish off proceedings in a complete dominance, Mumbai suddenly scrambled. It was more of a bowling show instead of blistering batting persona. The reward of winning toss favored Harbhajan Singh and Mumbai got back the winning track at home.

Wankhede Stadium of Mumbai is ready to rock the show. For the sake of given formalities, captain’s of each side appeared for toss. Mumbai declared boss of toss and asked Chargers for a bat. Mumbai underwent with two changes Levi for Blizzard, Franklin for Pollard and Munaf for Rahul Shukla; whereas, a string of changes took place for Chargers but in overseas combination only.

Mumbai’s game plan was clear before the game – get a win and improve the standings. On the other hand, Chargers can’t do much with a win either.

Match begins, field is placed and then Bhajji came with the new ball. Chargers were not given room for runs. A boundary or a six in every over and surely, Bhajji was smiling. Frustration of slow scoring enhanced batsmen to look for hits and poor try of Parthiv caught by Munaf. Patel sent off Patel, bit frenzy.

Mumbai got the momentum or you can say Chargers missed steady start. Every 1.2 over brought celebration for Mumbai fans. Franklin and Malinga brought charms to Mumbai bowling. In 13th over, Franklin bagged two wickets and ruined Chargers’ middle-order. Where 19th over of Malinga has summed up Deccan’s tail.

Just when Chargers were supposed to click over 100+ score, Malinga swapped off their charge on two consecutive balls. Wicket, Wicket and Chargers ends at 100 All OUT.

Though, chasing a mere total of 100 runs at home conditions won’t be an issue for Mumbai Indians. But pace of Steyn is something that could answer at every scenario. Levi totally beat by pace and it’s a wicket. Now, Chargers got momentum to set game or a wake-up call for Mumbai to play safe.

Mumbai kept patience and moved slowly. Their start is slower than Chargers had. Eagerness to finish low scoring game is an obvious thing for every cricketer. And somewhere, Mumbai is facing the same thing. Adding colors to that, Chargers were brilliant in bowling – courtesy well supported fielding.

At a stage, when Mumbai was 20 run short to clinch a tight-chasing-win their 5th wicket fall in form of Franklin. There were still 3.5 overs match left. A wicket or two, and the match is swapped. But nothing happened like so. Giving credit to slog overs, Mumbai batsmen hit fearless shots and sealed the game.

A chase that seems easy to walk down; ended with dominating efforts of both sides.

Mumbai, without a thought, deserve this win for given contribution; but you can’t skip Chargers’ spirit as well. Somewhere, they could end on a winning note; but then to whom you will blame.

IPL 5 : In name of Luck – Faf’s Art and Dhoni’s Craft | Planet "M"

The hot and humid weather of Chennai didn’t shatter focus of their captain cool and his army. Clash of two wicketkeeper captain’s clinched by MS Dhoni. Super Kings, who must need a win to rose-up in the points-tally, beat Royals in an easy chase at home.

In the hunt of 3rd consecutive win on cards, Dravid won the toss and decided to bat first. Kevon Cooper who has become a trump card for Royals replaces Johan Botha in playing XI. Instead of Local stars, Royals showed faith in outsiders. Pankaj Singh and Dishant Yagnik failed to mark a place in team and replaced by Stuart Binny and Shreevats Goswami.

Rajasthan Royals, under the captaincy of Rahul Dravid, surprising every IPL team with their performances and commitment towards win. The hunger for win earlier taught by former skipper Shane Warne, reflecting in similar way with Dravid. Of course, team composition too has changed in this season of IPL but their approach reminds seasonal memories of IPL-1.

On the other hand, Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings are shuffling with consistency in performance. Out of their last six matches, they won in just three matches. Playing in home conditions, in front of local crowd could work as winning-mantra and so as it did when Chennai registered 7-wickets win over Rajasthan Royals.

The two classy players – one named as The Wall whereas another expected to be the next of his style, Dravid and Rahane gave steady start to Royals before Ashwin strikes an opening wicket for Chennai. Owais Shah, who came as one down settled Rajasthan’s inning first with Dravid and later with Menaria, concluded by a catch of keeper Dhoni after a sparkling half century.

Good bowling in death overs from Kulasekara and Bollinger saved Super Kings from a big chasing target. Courtesy Bravo and Jadeja who prompted Shah and Menaria for more runs, otherwise Royals would have restricted to 120 runs. The batting cameo of Shah helped Royals to post a total of 146 runs on board.

In reply, Chennai begin their show with likes of Badrinath and their own rising star du Plessis. Though, Menaria came with new ball and justified well. And then Faf, too, showed respect towards Binny and sent him thrice across the boundary line for 4s. du Plessis found the start he needed to click through, so as got Chennai.

The half-century stand between Badri and Faf at last broken by Hogg in 8th over. Raina walked in for extending Badri’s contribution and yes, the charming Sanu scripted the wining note for team. It was the 17th over, when Copper turns the game for Royals. Yet, it wasn’t enough because the finisher was still there in the middle – Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Raina’s dismissal left 21-balls game asking 30 more runs to secure a home win.

Another close match for Super Kings and then the same way it was concluded. Bravo and Dhoni played accordingly their name and fame. Clever runs between wickets and some calculated boundaries. Climax turned into extreme pressure when Dhoni converted last ball into a winning chase. An easy single transformed into double. By giving marks to his luck, a late throw took place into the scenario and when, Lions roared with pride at their own den.

Thoughts with Royals to whom a moment has been provided by Cooper but then, luck is also a part of game. Chennai has become a king for their own crowd, once again!

In the battle of India’s two most reckoned skippers, Sahara Stadium of Pune witnessed a dadagiri win over luck of MS Dhoni. Though, captaincy tactics from the beginning till end brought full marks for Ganguly. Not just the team selection, but also the on field performance – Dada overshadowed Mahi. Stick to their impressive fielding, Ryder named a win for much anticipated Warrior’s game.

After winning toss, Chennai invited Warriors for fielding. Proving on captain’s faith, Murali Karthik justified with his selection. Some tight bowling along with well-supported fielding efforts increases woes for Super Kings. Thanks to Ashish Nehra who came in as 2nd seamer and provided room of runs by disturbing the disciplined efforts of his colleagues. Super Kings didn’t committed any mistake and hit him over the roof for boundaries and sixes.

Soon then, the arrival of Warriors’ invention – Rahul Sharma did the damage in form of grabbing du Plessis and Suresh Raina just when they were looking for big scores. Although, Jadeja and skipper Dhoni contributed score-board with their efforts but the anticipation of Warriors’ fielding left a remark between both sides. As a result, Chennai posted a total of 155 runs in their allotted 20 overs quota. Though, at a stage they were 100/3 after 13 overs and were supposed to end on a sum of 170-175.

In reply, Warriors got the handsome start. Couple of good hits and lavishing boundaries boosted the entire stadium. After electrifying fielding, none of any Warriors' seemed tired. Even the eagerness to score more runs lead a run out in form of Uthappa. Ryder, a hard hitter of ball, built a platform for Pune win along with aggression of Ganguly.

Two wickets fall within 4 overs and Warriors were 90/3 after 13 — just 10-runs short from Super Kings comparatively. But it wasn’t enough for Dhoni to be concerned about as Smith joined Ryder for more fire-works at home ground. Both hit Super Kings’ for stylish boundaries and huge sixes.

And then match went into last over thrill. Yo Mahesh who replaced Jakati in today’s match was failed to be a hero for his side. Might be, Chennai fans were considering him as Joginder Sharma who became hero after the final over against Pakistan in 2007 T20 World Cup.

But the beauty of IPL is totally different. Ryder hit young led for marvelous boundary and sealed the win with a six. The reward of quality fielding turned into win by good batting.

Like their last match against Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings failed to make a decent start against Deccan Chargers once again. Thanks to lofty hitting by du Plesis, Chennai’s poor start was given some momentum. Super Kings, who are looking for a hat-trick of title championship, totally dominated the game. Although they lost wickets at regular intervals, they managed to register a handsome win over Hyderabad.

Australia’s T20 Captain and now in the same role for chargers, Cameron White won the toss and invited Super Kings for bat. And decision wasn’t wrong as Chennai lost their first wicket on the fifth ball of the first over. It was du Plesis who kicked Chennai’s total well before got out on 39 after hitting 4 sixes.That was an awesome one-hand catch at long-on else just a pin short to another DLF maximum SIX.

Before Vizag witnessed a dazzling show of CSK T20 expert – Raina’s inning, Daniel Christian sent him back to pavilion. Though, Badrinath’s role was to keep the Run Rate balanced but arrival of two Billion Dollar boy – Ravindra Jadeja filled up energy in the scenario.

As expected, Jadeja rocked with bat and scored 2-runs short half century before an unfortunate hit wicket for oneself. A funny scenario to be witnessed. Later, Bravo joined the show and ended Chennai inning with a SIX before scoring 43 off 18 balls with 5 huge sixes.

Deccan got a target of 194 runs to win the contest at home conditions. And they started-off with a boundary to Ashwin. As match progressed, wicket started providing help to spin.

Neither Super Kings provided room for runs nor Chargers committed mistakes for a wicket. As a result, T20 contest became slower than a Test match. Super Kings were electrifying in fielding. Though, none of any player from Chargers scored much.

After getting good start, Shikhar Dhawan (21), Parthiv Patel (20) and Cameron White (23) were failed to convert the inning in a big total. They lost four wickets within 14 runs and turned the game for Super Kings. In 17.1 overs, Super Kings registered their first win in the tournament.
